In Jungian psychology, the "shadow self" is the unconscious part of your personality made up of traits, emotions, and impulses that you have rejected or hidden away because they were deemed unacceptable by your family or society. While it is often associated with "dark" emotions like rage, greed, or selfishness, the shadow can also contain positive qualities—like unexpressed creativity or assertiveness—that you were taught to suppress. Because these traits are buried in your unconscious, you might not realize they are there, which often leads to projecting your own hidden flaws onto other people.
